Statement by Senator McCain on Secretary Vilsack's Commitment to Resuming Cattle Inspecions in Agua Prieta, Sonora, by May 19, 2014

Statement

Date: May 8, 2014
Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Senator John McCain (R-AZ) today released the following statement on Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack's commitment to resuming cattle inspections in Agua Prieta, Sonora, by May 19, 2014:

"Yesterday, I spoke with Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, who committed to me that cattle inspections in Agua Prieta, Sonora, will resume by May 19, 2014. Over the past four months, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has banned their cattle inspectors from traveling to Agua Prieta, Mexico, to process cattle en route to Douglas, Arizona. The inspection moratorium has had a significantly negative economic impact on Arizona's cattle industry. I recognize that APHIS must carefully balance the agriculture interest of the United States with the safety of its inspectors working abroad, and I am pleased that the Secretary has indicated he is taking measures to enhance security for inspectors traveling to Agua Prieta so that cattle crossings will resume as indicated."
